eSSL U11-D 860-960 MHz UHF RFID card reader for desktop tag enrolment. USB output, 3-metre read range, office-side tag management. Built for Indian asset tracking and UHF rollouts.

Description

A Bhubaneswar IT firm’s owner has Wiegand-card stock from a previous deployment and needs readers that read his existing cards at the doors — and on top of that the firm is starting a UHF-based asset tracking rollout for laptops and lab equipment, which means the admin team also needs a desktop USB UHF RFID card reader at the front office to register new tags into the asset database. The door-side card readers are taken care of by Wiegand units already on order; what the admin team is missing is a desk-side UHF reader that plugs into a Windows machine over USB and lets the office manager enrol a fresh batch of UHF tags onto the asset list before they are stuck onto equipment. The eSSL U11-D is built for exactly this. A desktop UHF RFID card reader with USB output and a 3-metre read range — sized for office-based tag management, not for door access control.

Why integrators specify the eSSL U11-D

The eSSL U11-D is the desktop UHF RFID card reader integrators specify when the deployment needs an office-side tag enrolment station alongside the door access control system. USB output plugs into any Windows / Linux PC, the U11-D acts as a HID-class device, and the asset management or access control software reads the EPC of every tag presented within the 3-metre read range. For a UHF rollout — vehicle tags, laptop tags, asset tags — this kind of enrolment desk is the difference between a clean tag database and a mess of unregistered tags drifting through the building. The 3-metre range is intentionally short so the operator can isolate one tag at a time on the desk without picking up neighbouring tags from a nearby box.

RFID technology & read range

The eSSL U11-D operates on 860-960 MHz UHF (RAIN RFID) with a read range of up to 3 metres in clear-air desktop conditions. Practical desktop range — with the operator placing tags directly in front of the reader — is more like 30 cm to 1 metre, which is exactly what an enrolment workflow needs. The U11-D reads passive UHF tags, captures the EPC, and passes it over USB to the host PC. The access control system or asset management application registers the EPC against the new asset record. For UHF batch enrolment — say, a tray of 50 windshield tags before fleet rollout — the operator can present them one at a time and the U11-D card reader logs each EPC in sequence.

How it integrates with your access controller

The eSSL U11-D is a USB-connected desktop reader, so the integration path is software-side: the asset management or access control software on the PC reads the U11-D as a HID device and ingests the captured EPC. There is no Wiegand wiring, no RS485 daisy chain, no controller panel — the U11-D is a peripheral for the enrolment workstation, not a head-end reader for a door. For the building’s door-side card reader work, separate access control card readers (eSSL U10, U12-I or UR10R-1F for UHF gate; eSSL JS-500E or KR500-E for 125 kHz EM doors) handle that side, while the U11-D handles the enrolment side.

Daily operation

The eSSL U11-D sits on the office manager’s desk, plugged into a Windows PC over a standard USB cable. Power is drawn over USB (12V DC alternative also supported). The operator presents a tag, the reader captures the EPC, the application moves to the next tag in the workflow. LED feedback at the reader confirms each successful capture. For a fleet rollout or a laptop-tagging campaign, the U11-D card reader is the enrolment workhorse — the access control system stays untouched, the door-side readers stay untouched, and the U11-D quietly builds the tag database on the admin’s desk over an afternoon.

What integrators usually ask before ordering

Will it work with our existing access controller?
The eSSL U11-D is a USB desktop reader for tag enrolment, not a door-side access control reader. The integration is with the asset management or access control software on the host PC, not with a panel. For door-side UHF, use the eSSL U10, U12-I or UR10R-1F.

What’s the read range, and does it work through wallets/lanyards?
Up to 3 metres for UHF passive tags in clear desktop conditions. UHF is not for human card-tap; it is for asset and vehicle tags.

Can it read multiple card types (EM + Mifare)?
No — the U11-D is a UHF-only RFID card reader. For 125 kHz EM or Mifare enrolment, use the eSSL S990 or a Mifare equivalent.

Is it IP-rated for outdoor mounting?
The U11-D is an indoor desktop device. It is not built for outdoor or weather-exposed installation.

Does it support encrypted cards?
UHF passive tags use plain EPC reading. The U11-D card reader captures the EPC for the access control system; encryption variants exist for specialised UHF deployments.
