eSSL U5 — 860–960 MHz UHF RFID Card Reader (USB Desktop Tag Enrolment)

10 in stock (can be backordered)

eSSL U5 860-960 MHz UHF RFID card reader for desktop tag enrolment. USB output with 5-metre read range, office-side asset and tag management. Built for Indian warehouse and yard deployments.

Description

A Salem rice-mill admin wants cheap 125 kHz EM RFID readers at the godown gate — and on top of that the admin’s been told by the head office to start tagging grain sacks with UHF tags for inventory tracking ahead of the next FCI tender. The gate-side card readers are a separate procurement (the eSSL KR500-E IP65 is the obvious choice there for the outdoor godown gate). What this admin also needs is a desktop USB UHF RFID card reader at the admin office so the inventory clerk can enrol UHF tags onto fresh sack batches before they go out to the storage floor. 5-metre desktop range is more than enough for one-at-a-time tag enrolment; cheap UHF tag stock means the rice mill is not betting the next FCI cycle on expensive credentials. The eSSL U5 is built for exactly this. A USB desktop UHF RFID card reader for office-based tag enrolment and asset management.

Why integrators specify the eSSL U5

The eSSL U5 is the desktop UHF RFID card reader integrators specify when the deployment needs an office-side tag enrolment station for an asset-tracking rollout — warehouses, grain godowns, distribution centres, fleet depots. USB output plugs into any Windows / Linux PC; the U5 acts as a HID-class device and the asset management or access control software reads the EPC of every tag presented. 5-metre maximum read range — practical desktop range 30 cm to 1 metre — keeps the workflow tight: the operator isolates one tag at a time without picking up neighbouring tags from a nearby box. LED and buzzer feedback at the reader confirm each capture. For a rice-mill tag-enrolment workflow, the U5 is the unattended workhorse the inventory clerk uses for a couple of hours each morning.

RFID technology & read range

The eSSL U5 operates on 860-960 MHz UHF (RAIN RFID) with a read range of up to 5 metres in clear-air conditions. Practical desktop range — operator placing tags directly in front of the reader — is 30 cm to 1 metre, which is exactly what an enrolment workflow needs. The U5 reads passive UHF tags, captures the EPC, and passes it over USB to the host PC. The asset management application registers the EPC against the new asset record (sack batch, container, fleet vehicle, asset ID). For a batch enrolment of 100 sack tags before a delivery cycle, the operator presents tags one at a time and the U5 card reader logs each EPC in sequence.

How it integrates with your access controller

The eSSL U5 is a USB-connected desktop reader, so the integration path is software-side: the asset management or access control software on the PC reads the U5 as a HID device and ingests the captured EPC. There is no Wiegand wiring, no RS485 daisy chain, no controller panel — the U5 is a peripheral for the enrolment workstation, not a head-end reader for a door or gate. For godown gate-side work, a separate weatherproof Wiegand reader (eSSL KR500-E for 125 kHz EM with Wiegand output, eSSL U10 or U12-I for UHF gate with Wiegand) handles the door / gate side while the U5 handles the desk-side enrolment side. The U5 and the Wiegand gate reader work in parallel — one enrols, the other authenticates.

Daily operation

The eSSL U5 sits on the inventory clerk’s desk, plugged into a Windows PC over a standard USB cable. Power is drawn over USB (12V DC alternative also supported). The clerk presents a tag, the reader captures the EPC, the application moves to the next tag in the workflow. LED feedback confirms each successful capture. For a rice-mill UHF asset rollout, the U5 card reader is the enrolment workhorse — the godown gate readers stay untouched, the inventory database grows tag-by-tag on the admin’s PC over the working morning. Daily maintenance is essentially zero; cable check, USB port, restart if the application hangs.

What integrators usually ask before ordering

Will it work with our existing access controller?
The U5 is a USB desktop reader for tag enrolment, not a door-side access control reader. Software integration on the host PC; not wired to a panel.

What’s the read range, and does it work through wallets/lanyards?
Up to 5 metres for UHF passive tags. UHF is for asset and inventory tags — not human card-tap.

Can it read multiple card types (EM + Mifare)?
No — the U5 is UHF-only. For 125 kHz EM gate readers, use the eSSL KR500-E (IP65) for the godown gate.

Is it IP-rated for outdoor mounting?
The U5 is an indoor desktop device; not built for outdoor or weather-exposed installation.

Does it support encrypted cards?
UHF passive tags use plain EPC reading. The U5 card reader captures the EPC for the asset management or access control system.
